Workshop: “Experiencing e-Learning”
Day 1: e-Learning Strategies, Models and Tools
[9.30 am – 1.00 pm]
Session I: e-Learning fundamentals
Main topics covered in this session:
- e-Learning in the Knowledge Economy
- Paradigm shifts in human capital creation
- Defining e-Learning
- e-Learning strategies and models
- e-Learning technologies and demos
- Evaluating e-Learning
- Phases and roles of content design process
- The emerging phenomenon of MOOC
At the end of this session, participants will:
- Be aware about the importance of e-Learning in the knowledge Economy
- Know the fundamentals of e-Learning
- Have a systemic vision of the e-Learning technologies
- Know the main phases to structure an e-learning module
- Be aware about the emerging phenomenon of MOOC

Session II: Demo of an Open Source Platform for e-Learning, Document Management and Virtual Classroom
Main topics covered in this session:
- Introduction to “Apollo” open source platform: main components, features and functionalities
- Using the Document Management System: how to create a site, organize documents and resources, create users and assigning roles, how to use the workflow engine
- Using the e-Learning System: how to create and enroll in online courses, set up users, integration aspects with the Document Management component
- Using the Virtual Classroom System: how to create a virtual classroom session, presentation and recording options, desktop sharing, chat, integration aspects with the e-Learning component
At the end of this session, participants will:
- Understand benefits of an integrated approach to Document Management and e-Learning
- Understand benefits of using virtual classroom to extend e-learning experience
- Understand how to set up a document repository and a site for sharing documents and other information
- Understand how to set up and run an e-learning course
- Understand how to attend to a virtual classroom session
Each participant will receive a login and password for the hands-on session.
Day 2 – Hands on Session

Session III: Design and create an online course
In this practical session, participants will have access to the Apollo platform and will able to run, for each component, the main functionalities. This will include:
- the creation of a content repository with folders, content tags, content taxonomies
- the creation of a portal site for information sharing including Wiki, RSS Feed, activity monitoring
- the creation of an e-learning course with scheduled lectures and learning activities
- the set-up of learning materials and the creation of a SCORM module
- the set-up of a virtual classroom as an activity within an e-learning course
- the set-up of users roles and permissions, upload documents and learning materials
At the end of this session, participants will:
- Experience how to set up and organize a workspace for document management and content management
- Experience how to set up, organize and customize a site for sharing documents
- Experience how to design an e-learning course
- Experience how to produce learning materials
- Experience how to organize and delivery an e-learning course within the platform
- Experience how to set up and attend a virtual classroom session using tools as chat, audio/video conferencing, desktop sharing, document sharing
Short Bios
Gianluca Elia is Assistant Professor at the Department of Engineering for Innovation at the University of Salento (Lecce, Italy). His research is characterized by a cross-disciplinary focus in the fields of Knowledge and Process Management, Technology Enhanced Learning, Management Information System and Technology Entrepreneurship.
On these topics, he published more than 80 scientific articles in international journals (like Journal of Enterprising Culture, Knowledge and Process Management, Journal of Intellectual Capital), conference proceedings and books; he also edited three books. He is reviewer for international journals and conferences, and he is Associate Editor of the “International Journal of Knowledge and Learning”.
He has also been scientific coordinator of several research projects at the national and international levels. He has been coordinator of the “Mediterranean School of e-Business Management”, a Euro-Mediterranean initiative focused on Digital Innovation in Southern Mediterranean Countries.
In 2011 he participated in the Entrepreneurship Development Program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Boston, USA).
Currently, he is involved in a research project focused on creating Virtual environment fostering technology entrepreneurship, by leveraging Collective Intelligence.
From July 2014, he is Research Affiliate at the Centre for Collective Intelligence of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (Boston, USA).
Since 2001, he teaches in academic and corporate programs several topics such as e-business management, knowledge management, project management, management accounting, and entrepreneurship. He is also supervisor of graduation projects and PhD theses.
Gianluca Solazzo is a Research Fellow at Centro Interdipartimentale Cultura Innovativa d’Impresa – University of Salento. His research covers Semantic Web Technologies, Data Mining, User Profiling Techniques, Information Retrieval and Recommendation Systems, CRM systems, Business Intelligence Systems, e-Learning and Multimedia, and Distributed Application Design and Development. He participated in several Italian and European research projects on e-Business and Knowledge Management (Teschet, DBE, MAIS, Virtual eBMS, X.Net.Lab, i-Design). Currently, he is involved in VINCENTE research project (Virtual collective INtelligenCe ENvironment to develop sustainable Technology Entrepreneurship ecosystem), focused on collective intelligence tools and techniques for e-learning and multimedia applications. He also taught basic and advanced MIS courses in post-graduate programs at Scuola Superiore ISUFI and University of Salento, by integrating theoretical concepts with applicative e-Business Laboratories (CRM, ERP, and Business Intelligence).
