Invitation Conference

“SCALE-UP” stands for “Student-Centred Active Learning Environment with Upside-down Pedagogies “. It is a learning environment that facilitates active and collaborative learning. The classroom has a studio-like sitting carefully designed to facilitate interactions between teams of students who collaboratively work on short, interesting tasks. The basic idea is that students are given activities to do in class. These activities are two types “tangibles” (hands-on measurements and/or observations) and “ponderables” (interesting and complex problems to solve). The instructor becomes a facilitator, roaming around, asking questions, and helping teams with difficulties. Most of the “lectures” become class-wide discussions and there is no separate lab class. Currently more than two hundred universities across the US and around the world have directly adopted the SCALE-UP model and adapted it to their particular needs. At AUI we started experimenting with this concept back in Spring 2017. We invite you to join us in this new learning environment at AUI in room 8B/103. We’ll be presenting this environment as well as our observations, results, and challenges while implementing this concept.
